We really need to cut down on all we can.

True colours

PERHAPS it’s time to reassess Anzac Day’s relevance as a national public holiday, along with the other seven. After all, four of them — at Christmas and Easter — celebrate the birth and death of an Israeli who lived 2000 years ago; two — Australia Day and Anzac Day — commemorate the invasion of sovereign nations; one — the Queen’s Birthday — celebrates the birth of a born-to-rule Englishwoman; and one — New Year’s Day — is a holiday only because no one would go to work that day anyway. Throw in Victoria’s two — Melbourne Cup Day and Labour Day — and the only one that seems worth preserving is the last. Old leftie? Moi?
